I Hate Gray Paint

I have been searching for the perfect gray paint color for our living room and hallway. I have bought samples, searched online, and done the whole "try it on your own room" apps from various websites, and I still can't find a color I like. The first sample I tried was Popular Gray by Sherwin Williams. It was too pink in these rooms, too warm for the blue carpet.

The second color was Swanky Gray by Sherwin Williams. This time it was too blue, and when the light hits it just right it turns.... lavender.

The next color was Bedford Gray by Martha Stewart. This time it's closer to the color family I want, but WAY too dark to cover the entire main room and hallway in.

I am seriously at a loss right now. I don't want to commit to $100+ in paint if I don't love the color, and I have yet to find one I love! Here are some others I am considering right now...

Horizon by Benjamin Moore

Dolphin Fin by Behr

French Silver by Behr

OMG, who knew it would be THIS HARD to pick a color!?! I'm about fried... Which one is your favorite? If you have painted gray, which color did you pick? My biggest problem is that I have blue carpet which makes the gray turn too blue.....

  1. I am having the same problem! I want to find the right shade of gray for our master bedroom, but I can't make a decision to save my life. I think I might like Farrow & Ball Blue Gray (http://us.farrow-ball.com/blue-gray///fcp-product/100091), but I need to color match it to another brand because Farrow & Ball costs a bazillion dollars and is only available in a few places in the US. I have no idea how I will ever find an exact match. Good luck with your search :)

  2. I'm painting my dining room Dolphin Fin and my Front hall Horizon! We must have similar taste :) Moonshine is another (my kitchen) pretty one... but might read too blue for you. I personally think Horizon is your best bet with blue carpet. It seems a bit warmer and will contrast nicely with the blue. I read on a designer blog that it blends nicely with blues and lavenders. Good luck!

  3. I just realized (when I went to get more paint today) that the 'horizon' I got was from a custom color match (I brought in the Benj. moore color chart and had them scan and match the color.) It is much warmer (more of a putty color) and does not turn blue at all. Didn't realize the difference until I went back to get more and they did the match from the 'Horizon' formula they had on file in the computer. This is a truer gray (most likely what you have) and does turn slightly blue. Wonder if you tried the color match.... It may be just the color you are looking for!

  4. I can't believe that we both ended up with Nimbus Cloud! How funny is that?!? I'm glad that you like it... now I'm not worrying so much that I might have made the wrong choice. Hopefully our bedroom will be painted before Thanksgiving :)
